For the stretch of two weeks, I’ve been rambling about Holy Priests. Truly, I don’t think I have spent as much time on any other class, say the least any other spec. But every ramble (especially royal ones), must come to an end. And the end of this one must be grand.

For the grand finale, I am going to supply you with not one, but two tooltips for this new skill.

You got two eyes (unless you’re a pirate), so pay good attention.

It’s a metaphor.

I’m the mentioned champion, my salvation is realizing what is the perfect solution to the Holy Champion dilemma.

A quick replay. Holy Champion is my suggestion for a new skill for Holy Priests. At the moment, it only has a group utility, in the form of damage mitigation through sharing with a party/raid member. I’d like it to have some use in solo or battlegrounds (where it isn’t guaranteed that the Priest can find a champion to stand by his side).

I’ve been thinking about the last point for a few days, but nothing came to mind. Then all of the sudden, it struck me. It came from the big blue beyond. It gave me the best solution.

I have to credit Blizzard for this though, and the Argent Dawn.
For the solution lies within a horn.

And the Priest’s champion while being alone, will be none else than an NPC Guardian. Hopefully a more courageous one than the one pictured.

Ever tried to think about nothing, but a few seconds later some thought invades your mind in spite of your wish? Well, I’m facing quite the opposite.

I’m trying to think about something, but there’s nothing coming to mind.

My best efforts are put in order to come up with an original idea how to buff Holy Priest survivability while riding solo, but every time I think of something, it soon proves itself to be nothing good.

I am going to keep trying until I do.

Being swarmed by zombies sure doesn’t help though.

I left my last post at a concept. The concept was that Holy Priests should be granted an improved state of survivability, which would be given in a form of some champion. Further discussion of that concept brought a few points, which stated a mechanism of damage sharing, and a boon to healing to compensate for the champion taking more harm overall.

On this post, the idea is to try and construct a working ability. I would like to warn in advance that it might be trickier than previous skills, for a reason that will shortly be revealed.

I have had almost a week unobstructed, to enjoy the impact of the latest patch on the game. I have played all my mains (i.e. my 70s) with their new talents, and even experimented a bit with some of my alts.

Truly, Blizzard has come up with some superb talents for most of the classes.

I shall attempt to do the same. This time, last on the series, with the Holy Priests.

As the first step is being aware what the class lacks, our direction would be to improve the survivability of Holy. It is true that as a cloth wearer, they are supposed to be more frail than their fellow healers, yet I believe they still deserve a small improvement in that area.

After all, the new World of Warcraft (post-patch) is about having more fun, and dying too often just isn’t.

The trick however is, not to come up with something that already exists. The Holy’s talented brothers gain their survivability through talents such as Pain Suppression, Enlightenment and Improved Power Word: Shield. My plan is to suggest a new Holy ability, that will serve a similar purpose, yet achieve it in a different way.

Patch Loving

I have been absent for a little while, and I already feel sort of rusty.

Luckily, with today’s chemistry/technology/et cetera, rust is something that can easily come off. And if not, we can always cover it with a layer of paint.

So… Where was I?

In the new lands of Azeroth of course!
Since the Echoes of Doom have swept over the face of the world, wailing like foreboding spirits, everything is looking a little different. And by different, I mean it in a good way (mostly good anyways).

I have been touring much of the old, but it actually feels new now. I have marveled at new options, new powers, new skills and new possibilities. I have been reliving what existed for ages, and am enjoying every moment of it.

For those who have been living in a cave (truly, some fresh air will do you some good), a new content patch has gone live. It is a preparation for the arrival of the Lich King, and it offers an extremely large amount of new features.

I will not be covering those options, for that is already old news. What I do want to tell is what I mostly like about the things that have changed.

After I’m done (and by that I mean in another post), I will return to my bread-winning business – inventing stuff.

But first, 10 things I love about you, mister patch.

Regarding the picture, I’d like to think all the ones on the right are queuing in LFG for a Priest, just as that guy on the left passes, but maybe he’s Shadow?

At least, his clothes don’t look like any healing gear I know (*wink*).


What this post is meant to be is, a (very) short introduction to what the next skill I will invent is going to be.

For those who didn’t follow, it is going to be a Holy Priest skill, as I have already covered new skills for all the other healing specs.

The idea was, to create a skill that will tend each healer’s weak spot. I admit in some cases it is less good than in others, but I am not ashamed of that.

I’d like to quickly recap what I have done, before telling you what I am going to do.

  • Shaman. I analyzed that Shamans were having mana issues, but I didn’t offer a solution to that. The reason was mainly because it can be fixed with minor alterations, instead of creating a skill solely for this purpose (which by the way, they already somehow have with Mana Tide Totem).
    So I have addressed another point they may have, and that is larger scale area of effect healing. Shamans get Nightmare Catcher for this purpose.
  • Paladin. These guys are having mobility issues, but those are somewhat addressed in Wrath of the Lich King. In addition, they aren’t very efficient at healing area of effect damage, and this is why I designed All Under Heaven for them.
  • Druid. Where the Paladins are really weak, the Druid excels. They are the archetypes of a mobile healer, but their downside, which is somewhat addressed in Wrath, is their lack of manageability for burst damage.
    I have come up with Embrace of Nature, which is simply put another tool for the same problem.
  • Discipline Priest. A rather rare breed, but supposedly, it is going to change. Discipline Priests aren’t very common in PvE at the moment, possibly for their lack of talented heals. They have terrific tools tailored for resilience, but those don’t fit instancing very well (due to aggro management under a Power Word: Shield).
    It is being looked into for Wrath of the Lich King, and I have decided to sweeten their transition into PvE by designing them another skill to provide mitigation. I have named it Boon of Fortitude.

And now, a single healer remains.

Holy Priests are jack of all trades. They have something for every occasion, but the price they have to pay for that is their lack of survivability.

Priests are extremely frail. They tend to die alot. And Holy, compared to Discipline, have very little to prolong their suffering in this world. In 9 out of 10 cases, once the Holy Priest is hit, the next thing the raid is going to see is his Spirit of Redemption.

The conclusion? Holy Priests are going to get something to improve their survivability.

Last in line, but at least they will get what they came for.

Steadily Approaching

It is nearly here.

The silence before the storm…
So quiet now.

I am afraid to breath.

In such stillness, even the weakest of sounds could reverberate into a rage.

Echoes from the past start filling my dreams.
Dreams of destruction, chaos, and ruin.

Echoes of Doom.

It is coming.

I am an European player, and oddly enough, although our day starts before it does in the U.S, we get our patch one day later. Which is for the best in my opinion, since it gives us another day where the folks from Blizzard can discover last minute bits of trouble and get them fixed.

The famous patch 3.0.2 is already deployed in America (I think), and is coming tomorrow to Europe (and the rest of the world?) as well. I suspect I might be pretty busy checking the new things, from the talents, through the barbershop and UI features, to the achievement system.
Aye, I’m going to keep myself pretty busy.

Which might hold me from writing around here, so I thought I’d leave a note. In any case, it is only a matter of a couple of days, until I feel I’m standing once again on a ground I am familiar with.

I will try to start an introduction to the Holy Priest skill sooner than later, but I can’t promise anything.

Continued: Boon of Fortitude

I said I’ll be sleeping over it, and that I did.

Two days ago, I’ve introduced my personal idea of a future Discipline Priest ability, which I have named Boon of Fortitude (nicknamed boon). At the time, I wasn’t exactly sure how this would work, and I proposed three alternatives.

Sleep helped me reach a decision.

Boon of Fortitude will increase the target’s health by a percentage of its maximal health. And the reason for this decision is quite straightforward – Discipline Priests are slowly shaping to be superior at tank healing (quote), and boon feels like a tank healing tool.

So, here is the final piece.

There is a last class that remains to be covered.
Actually, there are two healing talent specs that remain.
To be honest, I didn’t consider this until the writing of these lines.

So far, when I have designed healing abilities, I was thinking those would probably be talents, so that non healing specs would not have access to them. This line of thought calls for Priests having a healing ability both for Holy and for Discipline.

And I admit, when I started writing this post today, I had a single idea in mind.

Now I have to decide whether it should be a Discipline or a Holy talent, then come up with another one for the other spec.


I think that Holy is more about tending for the masses, while Discipline is more the resilient combat Priest.

Under such descriptions, Boon of Fortitude is probably a Discipline talent.
